[2024]The Kinetic Platform
The Kinetic Platform
Physical motion is difficult to design because of its temporal nature: The way an object moves is caught in time, and is therefore challenging to both shape and document. In collaboration with Random Studio Amsterdam, I facilitate and document rotational kinetic prototyping. I situate myself in their process for design, supported by documentation in form of annotated videos and photos. The resulting design is a versatile platform, which is tailored to the explorative way their research lab works.
The platform uses a microcontroller to drive the motor which means it can be controlled by forwarding only a angular variable over serial. This makes it easy to integrate in existing pipelines of the studio such as TouchDesigner or TypeScript.
The flat top of the platform is made to expand with prototyping – such as a screen-holder for Demo Day.
A modular drivetrain allows reconfiguring torque and speed
For Demo Day, two kinetic platforms were deployed to present an interactive poster, and a screen showing a video of annotated process documentation.
